Quinta de Valbom

A secret revealed between the douro`s lines

Scroll
Quinta de Valbom

In the heart of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, in the Baixo Corgo sub-region stands Quinta de Valbom. Its traditional terraces form a natural amphitheater where centuries-old vines spread out, in a stunning landscape that culminates on the banks of the Douro River.

In the 45 hectares of vineyards, planted on terraces, you can find the traditional Douro grape varieties in a field blend.

History

Its privileged location, next to the Douro River, holds a long and eventful history of wine production. Like the old “Quintas do Douro”, the tradition of wine production is centuries old in Valbom, already existing at the time of the first Pombaline demarcation, by the law of September 10th 1756.

In the records of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, started in 1775, there are the annual lists of the commercialization of casks and barrels of wine from Quinta de Valbom, or Valle Bom (Good Valley), as it is often referred to.

Sustainability

Currently with 45 hectares of vineyards, Quinta de Valbom lives within a sustainable perspective.

Restoration of water lines and traditional shale walls; the use of schist props to frame the entire vineyard; the use of mules or males to work in the vineyards and the maintenance of the traditional field blend with grape varieties typical from the region, are some of the used techniques and materials.

In Spring time, the overgrowth between the lines of the vines is quite visible. When flowering, it will attract pollinators, enrich the soil, and reduce the high risk of erosion, given the steep slopes typical of the region.

In this regenerative viticulture perspective, the landscape becomes an authentic natural painting, which is only possible with culture operations designed for the viticultural system, having sustainability as the main pillar.

Sustainability

In addition to the vineyard, there are also bordering olive groves, small orchards and an organic vegetable garden. The maintenance of these and other areas of high biodiversity value, become relevant for the protection of the natural and ecological heritage of Quinta de Valbom.

In the cellar, traditional methods are used, such as foot treading the grapes in granitic lagares, a vertical hydraulic press and all the ancient knowledge that, like the vineyards, also built the cellar on levels, so that the transport of the wines takes place by gravity.

Each vineyard, with its age, exposure and altitude, gives rise to a different wine!

Vineyards

The regenerative agriculture practices applied to the high potential of the vineyards are combined with traditional winemaking techniques, such as foot treading and the most current oenological techniques.

Each vineyard, with its age, exposure and altitude, gives rise to a different wine! Quinta de Valbom Red and Quinta de Valbom Red Vinhas Velhas are wines that reflect the more traditional characteristics of Douro wines and with a current profile that fits the standards of national and international consumption.

Team

“The preservation of the Douro`s identity and traditions combine with the most modern viticulture and winemaking techniques, together with the knowledge of the Herdade dos Grous technical team. These combinations are responsible for the creation and production of Quinta de Valbom wines.”
